Acoustic Cafe Review
Trent Wagler’s debut CD “Journal of a Barefoot Soldier” is a collection of original songs that are deeply rooted in traditional music. Elements of bluegrass, folk, country, blues, jazz, and even gospel find their way into Trent’s catchy melodies and insightful lyrics. Universal themes of love, loss, and hope are addressed through musical styles ranging from ballads and waltzes to upbeat bluegrass and funky jams. Guitars, mandolin, and bass provide the setting for songs that recall a more familiar time and yet sound fresh and creative.
With a slightly different instrumentation from the CD, Trent Wagler and the Steel Wheels bring high energy and solid musicianship to the stage with their mix of original and traditional music. Eric Brubaker sends sparks flying on the fiddle, Brian Dickel holds the sound together with consistent basslines, while Trent leads with skillful guitar work and powerful vocals. The trio moves easily from originals to cover songs and traditional tunes, producing a sound that is both fun and engaging.
