The lyrics are thought provoking and introspective, and the instrumentation is simple, yet full of emotion.

Trent’s original recordings with Jay Lapp in Jay’s Indiana Studio (2005). The story goes that Jay invited Trent up for a session. Trent drove from Virginia and stayed on Jay’s couch for 4 days while they recorded the 10 original tracks that would become the start of a musical partnership that continues to blossom.

The songs of Journal are perhaps Trent’s most diverse palette of songwriting. While there is pure Virginia in the song Blue Ridge Mountains, there are elements of funk and Texas songwriters of old that are tapped in songs like Hot Steam Rises. Journal is also the most paired down of any of the albums. Between Trent’s guitar and vocals, you hear the unmistakable sounds of Jay Lapp’s mandolin and guitar sounds. Also featured in this project is bassist Derek Kratzer formerly of the Goldmine Pickers.
